94th NY Co H Honors Fallen Civil War Soldiers
at Forest Lawn Cemetery

By Tim Fildes

A big thank you is due to Dave Schmidt for setting up the Memorial Day ceremony in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The event was well attended by several re-enacting group’s, boy scouts, and I believe a couple of local dignitaries and a fair amount of public. The day began with everyone pitching in and placing the flags on all the gravestones of the Civil War veterans. There are over 500 men buried there so this was a bit of an undertaking but it went very well. The actual ceremony began with a couple of songs sung by all in attendance. Ben Marianek from the 155 th NYVI who talked about Memorial Day how it began and what it really means. He also spoke about some of the personal history of a couple of the soldiers buried there. Mr. Lincoln then gave the Gettysburg address and the event ending with everyone joining in and singing "My Country Tis of Thee".

Both Channel 2 and Channel 7 news covered the event and hopefully you all caught Dave Schmidt’s interview on Channel 7 where he summed it all up with the following, “Today is a day to go to a cemetery or parade and honor those who fought and dies for our Country. It is not a day to go to the mall and shop.” (this is paraphrased as I do not have the exact quote) Thank you all who attended

To All,
It is another sad day for us all as we have lost another close ERA member from our family. Gen. Custer (Dave Schmidt) passed our world today due to cancer. Dave was a good friend and loved reenacting. We will miss him playing his Civil War music in his parked car at events. I have no further information about Services for Dave at this time but ask all to include him and his family in your prayers. May he enjoy life in a better world for eternity.
