Marilla Civil War Days

June 24 - 26, 2010

This Day in Civil War History
1861 - Thursday
The Kentucky legislature declares that Kentucky will remain neutral in the upcoming war. This neutrality lasts all of four months, ending in Sept. 1861, when Conf. troops move into the state and seize the city of Columbus. The State of Tennessee was officially and ceremoniously admitted to the Confederate States of America today. The Confederate Congress took the action at its meeting place in Montgomery, AL, which was the capital of the secessionist nation at this time. The first capital would not be the capital much longer. To encourage the secession of Virginia it was decided to move the Confederate seat of government to Richmond.

1862- Friday
in VA, Gen. McClellan established his headquarters at White House, formerly a Lee family property, on the Pamunkey River.

1863- Saturday
James D. Bullock was on a mission in Europe to commission the building of warships for the Conf. government. His only problem was that he had no immediate means to pay for these vessels. Trying to get the work done completely on credit had got him laughed out of England, so he was trying his luck in France. There too, he wrote to Navy Sec. Malloy today, '. The French builders, like the English, wanted money, and were not willing to lay down the ships unless I could give them security in the shape of cotton certificates. ' These were essentially bonds payable in bales of cotton instead of money. The Union and the Confederate armies around Vicksburg fight the Battle of Champion Hill. The hill, which is vital because it commanded most of the roads east of Vicksburg, changed hands throughout the day. By evening, it was solidly in Union hands. Grant was made aware of Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's plans by one of Johnston's couriers - a Union spy - who stopped to let Grant read the dispatches before taking them to Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton

I'm having a difficult time learning about generals rank and branch insignia. Did generals have branch insignia or did they just wear what they wanted. also did all generals wear the same three star collar rank. I have been involved in reenacting and as a sutler I really should know the answer to these questions so maybe I can stop being ignorant. Del del@reenactmentshop.com

Is there a need for good clothing sutlers? The reason I asked is that I am thinking about transtioning from a 18th century miltary tailor to civil war. Why? Not many are willing to pay for custom 85% hand stitch men's military and civilian clothing. I've been told that I am one of the best in the 18th century reenactment. But my back is not holding up with long hours hand stitching. Check out www.baldwinclothing.com and send me your comments to baldwinrichard@juno.com
