1861- Saturday; Surprisingly, the transfer of delivery service between the United States Post Office and the Confederate States Post Office is completed smoothly. After this date, mail delivery within each area was not a problem, but mail service between the United States and the Confederate States of America was nonexistent.
1862- Sunday; It is now official, Gen. Robert E. Lee, known as 'Granny Lee ' to most of his men, is in command of the ANV. George McClellan, when apprised of the news, remarks that he preferred facing Lee rather than the incapacitated Joe Johnston. 'The former is too cautious and weak under grave responsibility. Personally brave and energetic to a fault, he yet is wanting in moral firmness when pressed by heavy responsibility and is likely to be timid and irresolute in action.'
1864- Wednesday; The Battle of Cold Harbor begins as Lee begins to entrench. By the end of the engagement, Grant will have thrown 3 Corps against Lee's entrenched position with horrendous losses.
